What is Asthma?

Asthma is a disease of the lungs. People who suffer from asthma have sensitive airways. They are sensitive to allergens and irritants (things in the air that can be irritating to the lungs).

Asthma symptoms can start when these allergens and/or other irritants in the air cause the lining of the airways to swell. This can make these airways become narrow, making it more difficult to breathe. The muscles around the airways can then spasm, which causes the airways to become even narrower. When the lining of these airways becomes inflamed, they will produce more mucus. The mucus then clogs the airways and further blocks the proper flow of air. This is what is called an asthma attack.

The prescription medication Singulair® can be used to treat asthma. Talk to your doctor to see if the prescription medication Singulair® is right for you.
