Trusopt®


What is Trusopt®?

Trusopt® (dorzolamide hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor formulated for topical ophthalmic use. Trusopt® is used to treat increased pressure in the eye caused by open-angle glaucoma. Trusopt® is also used to treat a condition called hypertension of the eye.

What are the possible side effects of Trusopt®?

The most frequent side effects associated with Trusopt® were ocular burning, stinging, or discomfort immediately following ocular administration. This occurred in about one-third of the patients taking Trusopt®. Approximately one-quarter of patients noted a bitter taste following administration of Trusopt®. Superficial punctate keratitis occurred in 10-15% of patients and side effects including an ocular allergic reaction in approximately 10%. Blurred vision, eye redness, tearing, dryness, and photophobia were side effects that occurred in 1-5% of patients taking Trusopt®. Other ocular events and systemic events were reported infrequently, including headache, nausea, asthenia/fatigue; and, with Trusopt® skin rashes, urolithiasis, and iridocyclitis will occur rarely.

Side effects are difficult to predict. Some side effects are normal, while other side effects are not. Always discuss any side effects you are experiencing while taking any prescription medication, including Trusopt®, with your doctor.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is actually a group of eye diseases that lead to damage of the optic nerve. Glaucoma can then lead to vision loss and the possibility of blindness. Optic nerve damage usually occurs in the presence of high intraocular pressure. Glaucoma can occur with normal or even below-normal eye pressure. Glaucoma currently affects about three million Americans. About half of these individuals do not know they have Glaucoma.
