Vaqta® is a vaccine used to prevent infection by hepatitis A. Vaqta® contains inactivated hepatitis A virus that is not capable of causing disease, but instead stimulates your body so it will produce its own antibodies and fight the disease.
Hepatitis A is a serious disease of the liver that is spread most often through infected food or water by the hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis A is much more common in areas of the world that have a lower level of sanitation and sewage systems.
Common side effects of Vaqta® include: soreness where the vaccine was injected
Less common side effects of Vaqta® include: fever of 37.7°C (100°F) or higher, general feeling of discomfort or illness, headache, lack of appetite, nausea, tenderness or warmth at injection site
Some rare side effects of Vaqta® include: aches or pain in joints or muscles, diarrhea or stomach cramps or pain, itching, swelling of glands in armpits or neck, vomiting, welts
While taking Vaqta®, you should seek emergency medical attention, from a doctor or health care professional, if you experience any of the following side effects: difficulty breathing or swallowing, hives, itching, especially of feet or hands, reddening of skin, especially around ears, swelling of eyes, face, or inside of nose, unusual tiredness or weakness (sudden and severe)
Side effects are difficult to predict. Some side effects are normal, while other side effects are not. Always discuss any side effects you are experiencing while taking any prescription medication, including Vaqta®, with your doctor.
Some medications may interfere with Vaqta®, so you should always let your doctor know about any medication you are taking.
